The Difference Between Gel and Acrylic Nails
Getting your nails done is a more complex process than it used to be. Gone are the days of old when the only thing you had to worry about was choosing the right shade for the season.
Nowadays, it’s not just the colour that needs choosing but the type of nail, too. We’re going to walk you through the difference between two of the most popular options – gel and acrylic – so you can choose the best nail type for you.
Why pampering your nails is important
Your nails matter more than you might think, and taking care of them to keep them strong, healthy and clean should be an important part of your personal grooming regime.
Nail hygiene should be at the top of your to-do list when it comes to nail care. Not only does proper nail hygiene keep your nails free from debris and germs, but it also makes for a better first impression and a fun means to personal expression.
Going on a date? Heading to a job interview? Presenting at an important work meeting? Whatever the occasion, dress to impress with nails that look fresh, clean and fabulous.
What are acrylic nails?
Acrylic nails are an extension glued onto your nail to increase length and longevity. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Cardi B and J-Lo have all embraced the acrylic nail trend, making it the latest must-have look for wardrobes everywhere.
Acrylic nails are made from a liquid/powder combination that’s mixed together into a dough. Your natural nail has to be filed down to create a rough surface that the glue can stick to. Once glued to the nail, the acrylic is shaped, buffed and painted to get that celebrity-style look.
Acrylic nails look great and can last up to four weeks. However, keep in mind that their removal can be a time-consuming process and this technique can also be damaging to your natural nails by making them dry, brittle and weak.
What are gel nails?
Gel nails differ from acrylics because they are not an extension of your natural nails. Instead, similar to a normal polish, they are applied to the nail (without extending the length at all) and
can last up to two weeks.
What makes gel nails interesting is their drying process. While normal polish is simply left to air dry, gel nails are dried (or ‘cured’) with a UV light that hardens the gel layers and prevents smudging. Curing your gel nails with UV light leaves you with a glossy, chip-free manicure!
At mister beauty, we specialise in the gel technique because it’s gentler on your nails and delivers a stylish look while still maintaining your nail strength and integrity.
What is the best nail style for you?
As with anything, finding the nail style you really love comes down to personal preference. Whether it’s length, longevity, nail integrity or the overall look that calls to you, choose the type of nail that feels right for you.
And remember, you’re not locked into any one type of nail – why not try one this week, and another the next? The team at mister beauty can talk you through different nail types and recommend the style that we think will work best for you.
